I didn't associate it with any particular meaning but I've made this very same misreading before so I recovered fairly quickly.

I've managed to get coworker into my brain but I still see echoes of someone who orks cows.

"Nonnative" always seems to me like one of those Latin declensions, like "ablative."

I think you're thinking of the nanitive suffix, which is similar to the diminutive one.
