bringing a person's latent ideas into clear consciousness. From the Greek, maieuesthai, of or pertaining to a midwife. Socrates compared himself to a philosophical midwife, who through his questioning could enduce the delivery of superior understanding in the other person's mind, because the knowledge was already present in that person's mind.

I like this word. The socratic method involved two steps: irony, or the process of fully destructing all knowledge you think you had, and maieutics, as you accurately describe, the art of midwive, or making appear the knowledge you had without knowing. It looks like psychoanalisis, but it deals with knowledge rather than with wishes

Those conversations are nice to read and Socrates was a shrewd clever man. But wasn't he always so right because he did the questioning more than producing answers? Wasn't he the inventor of cross- examination? Would have been a good lawyer too?

Of course you are right again. How nice it would have been to be a stander-by and listen to the conversations for real. ( no women allowed? )

To be a "fly on the wall", has been a dream of mine in more ways than one and this surely is a good example.

More chance to stay alive and fully follow the conversation being a butterfly on the wall.

I think a butterfly would attract too much attention, but the chances of staying alive are better, agreed. And then there are the places I could not get away from, fast enough.

Yes, good site, had it bookmarked. Have dyslexia, and have the tendency to confuse one word for another, so need all the sites I can get. thanks for the reminder.
