BEARINGS

change B to T and get

TANGIERS or ANGRIEST or GANTRIES or GRANITES or INGRATES or GASTRINE or ASTRINGE or... (fades off into the night)

That's the magic set of letters that Martin Gardiner a long time ago alleged in Scientific American has no fewer than 65 different anagrams. Now we have nine.

edit: Ten: RANGIEST.

Woooff! Are you after all 65? Are they not just to be found already together? BTW, I still count 9. ('Bearings' does not count) Unless you count East ring in.

You're right, it's nine. EAST RING doesn't count, unless perhaps you're a circus afficionado.

I'd love to see the entire list, though I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the vast majority of the offerings. My recollection is that they were all to be eight-letter words.

The Mathematical Games column that Gardiner wrote that in is from the Sixties, I think, give or take ten years. He gave a reference identifying the individual who made the assertion and I suppose I could look it up but I haven't the initiative.

I've done some looking, there are lists, but after about a number of words they all end up in split words like East ring. I got one more though, swimmers.
