The only online image i could find for a purlicue indicated the index finger and thumb were touching, but that does not seem right to me. An extended thumb and index finger makes a gun. Everybody knows that.

An interesting note on perlicue in a 19th century magazine digitized over at Google Books (link). (Not sure I'd buy the etymology.) Also, the entry in the Dictionary of the Scots Language link.

[Appar. from pirlie, curly, s.v. PIRL, n., 1. The second element may represent cue, Fr. queue, a tail, also of a wig. The word seems to have originated as a school term in regard to handwriting.

This seems to make sense?

It does'nt make a gun when you also stretch the other three fingers.

I suspect the forefinger and thumb aren't meant to be extended straight. This picture looks like the extension that's meant. Do you have a link to the picture you found, dlerh?

It's funny because I thought that is what was meant: finger extended completly as if shooting a gun.

Purlicue and gun are not words you'd expect to have any association. Unless it were a frivolously decorated one.
