eta, I meant the term in all its forms and meanings. I too have never heard "taverns" to mean a sandwich!
To me, the word barbecue when it refers to meat means that the meat has been shredded, and has sauce either in it or on it. If it is in large pieces with sauce, for ex. a leg or a thigh, then we say we're having barbecued chicken. Chicken BBQ is shredded chicken with sauce.
Yup, a "tavern" is a sloppy joe but shredded chicken? Not where I live, people would leave and head for
Micky D's, if they thought they were getting Bar-B-Que and received it already "chewed".
