Without getting right down into recipes, please (discussion of style is fine): what are your-all's definitions of barbecue?

Some kind of sauce on meat cooked over a charcoal grill.

barbecue

"Real" BBQ: meat cooked slowly by a smoking process; poor-man's BBQ: meat grilled. As Faldo suggested a sauce is important (red, yellow, etc.). But for me, I always imagine the original Carib beds that the word originated from. When ever you get two or more Southerners together and they begin to annoy you, ask them what BBQ is and what's the best version there is, and then stand back and chuckle.

zmjezhd has hit it right on! Barbecue is a slow process which few in the US actually do. Most people that say they're going to "barbecue" something are actually just grilling. Grilling is cooking quickly over high heat. To me, the "poor man's barbecue" is not grilling, but combining oven roasting with grill finishing (and/or beginning...), which satisfies me, although I'm not really poor... :0)

and in my family, a barbecue was a particular sandwich, usually in a hamburger bun, which was a ground beef/ketchup mix. in other parts of the country, they were called "taverns", "made-rights", or "sloppy joes".

And sometimes just within a few miles. I live in an urban setting, but visited a friend about 130
miles away who invited me to the local bar & grill for "taverns". I was lost. It was a small town
of 900+ folks, and they all laughed, to my expense. But good for the soul. To me a tavern is a
"bar", "pub", etc. The "tavern" turned out to be a good old-fashioned sloppy joe. At the church that
Sunday, the pastor asked the ladies to bring "bars", and I thought "here we go again", without knowing
that 'bars" are cake cut into rectangular pieces. Lots of fun.

Growing up we'd grill using charcoal, wood, or pine cones. These days most folk down here have a gas barbie on the deck some with rotisseries and hoods for baking. It is a very common form of weekend cooking down this way.

stand back and chuckle. I am! But in a nice way.
eta, I meant the term in all its forms and meanings. I too have never heard "taverns" to mean a sandwich!

To me, the word barbecue when it refers to meat means that the meat has been shredded, and has sauce either in it or on it. If it is in large pieces with sauce, for ex. a leg or a thigh, then we say we're having barbecued chicken. Chicken BBQ is shredded chicken with sauce.

Yup, a "tavern" is a sloppy joe but shredded chicken? Not where I live, people would leave and head for
Micky D's, if they thought they were getting Bar-B-Que and received it already "chewed".

This is what I call my barbecue, but Jackie once told me this is called freegan cookout.(?) As a rule I'm just happy with the fire and too much trouble to put up on some meat or fish and survey it. Sit and enjoy the flames. BBQC was imported from Yous in the 70-s. freegan cookout

Magnificent!
I'll send you pictures of mine soon, minus the hawks as they
seem to have found other roosting places, which is OK as they
do feast on the rabbits and other little uninvited guests to
my garden. Received a camera for posting pictures on computer.
And now to learn how to use it. Can't post here yet, but can
send email. Beautiful garden.

Thank you for calling my gardening from scratch magnificent.
I guess the gardening I do will be called 'freegan' too. Succes and luck with the camera. Reading the instructions slowly mostly gives good results.

Not for "your's truly".
I have too much trouble with written instructions,cf when you
all try to teach me how to post pictures here.
The camera's instruction book is 196 pages in English.
I am only on page 38 and that took two hours. I am just no
good with "Tab A into Slot B". If someone shows me I have it
forever, but reading instructions are insufferable.

No it's not! Faldage! Jackie! I really got this word from you. How else can I have it in my picture files under the title of freegan? We had a consumer-lifestyle discussion last year somewhere.
