Does anyone know why we say we hull strawberries? A non-native English speaker asked me what I meant, and after thinking about it I decided that it is a very odd term for what it means. A hull is an outer shell, which strawberries do not have! For anyone else who might not know, it means that I cut out the leaves and the little core underneath them.

No, seriously, the second meaning of hull as a noun in the AHD is: "[t]he enlarged calyx of a fruit, such as a strawberry, that is usually green and easily detached": link). So, it went from a skin or husk which needs to be removed before the dining commences to the green, tough bit that needs to be removed before the dining commences. Works for me, but thanks I never heard of husking strawbs afore ...

Botany.
1.the outermost group of floral parts; the sepals.
2. Anatomy, Zoology. a cuplike part.
(sepals being the individual parts of the calyx)
Then Jackie, it means you dig a hole in the strawberry?
Never seen them like that.

Branny, yes, you dig a hole, sort of: you postion the leaves so that they're all pointing up (so you don't cut through any of them, hopefully), then put the point of a sharp knife at the edge of the base of these leaves, press in a little bit, then move the point around the circle; usually but not always, a little soft core of soft flavorlessness will come with the leaves when you flip them out. Then you can cut them up if they're large, and mash 'em up real good with a spoonful of sugar, and leave 'em to macerate a bit; then...YUM! As a matter of fact, I just finished a bowl of strawberry shortcake. Best dessert in the world, bar none!

Ah, they are usually good without anything added, but sometimes soaked for a while in a little red wine or with a bit of really good balsamic vinegar. I have seen them dipped in chocolate, but I have never much liked adulterating the latter. In the wild, you simply hold the strawb by its leaves and husk 'em with your teeth.

 Woke up to this alarming misunderstanding. I do love love strawberry shortcake, Jummmm!! Just tell me when you've got it ready! I'll be there! I love strawberry-anything, except when I eat the fruit as fruit I don't hulk them or sugar them. Excuse my overreacting and I'll have strawberry icecream tonight for dessert. Are we even?

Dag nab it, am I the only Star Trek the Next Generation fan here? 'Course, that was my favorite episode. That was a quote from Data. The episode where they all got drunk on weird water. Well, kinda sorta! The "polywater" infected another ship, and then the crew that went to the ship to investigate. They didn't drink it; it passed around by touch with an "infected" person. The quote is actually "We are more alike than unlike, my dear captain. I have pores. Humans have pores. I have fingerprints. Humans have fingerprints. My chemical nutrients are like your blood. If you prick me, do I not... leak?" , which makes sense. I am not a trekkie/er, but I have seen all the episodes of all the series's and I like them all, especially TNG. I did get to meet James Doohan at a SciFi convention (he didn't do Star Trek conventions...), but if I could meet only one actor from any series, I'd chose Patrick Stewart. And no, I haven't seen the new movie, but I want to! :0)

It's definitely a play on the Bard's words, but the "leak" part is in reference to Data's androidness, since he doesn't actually "bleed". I remember seeing that episode and laughing at that line.

Just replayed the moment four times; I stand by my statement. It looks and sounds like he's saying bleek; plus, the preceding sentence is, "My chemical nutrients are like your blood."

It has been noted by others that in the performance, it sounds as though there is a slight "b" sound before leak, but in the script, it's leak: Naked Now script If you do an Edit/Find for leak, you can jump to it. :0)

I could see Spiner stumbling on the shift from the straight Shakespeare quote and correcting himself, but the use of "leak" would be perfectly in character for Data.
