Don't mind me. It's PERMEATE we're working on.

BRIGANTINE is the word.
BANTERING Through BALTERING N to L to INTEGRABLE add E and scramble.
It´s all a matter of seconds here.

This ship keeps sailing some way through my mind.

INTEGRITA

I --> E = INTEGRATE*

G --- C = INTRICATE

R --> S = INSTIGATE

*(which is leads to TANGERINE, which is getting close to TANGIERS, that collection of letters once alleged by Martin Gardiner in a Scientific American "Mathematical Games" column to have no fewer than 65 valid anagrams!)

I admit it is slightly on the very edge of admittable, but did you try for almost two days to get out of ingratiate? shocked
I don't mind taking it back, but I'm done with ingratiate for now. smile

Well, there's

INGRATIATE

E ==> O

GRATIATION

No, I never heard of the word either, except maybe as the opposite of ingratiation. And there's no listing in OneLook.com either. But there are 2,200ish hits on Google.com, and in particular one might look at Table 2.5 here [drop down four or five screens worth and you'll find it], talking of the "gratiation effect of the Moon since its formation 4.45 billion years ago (bya)" making the Earth's day slowly longer. Hard to judge the validity of the site, though.

Personally I'd just as soon go on from INSTIGATE, but however the consensus would like to proceed is OK with me. (For that matter I'd even go with the capitalized words to broaden our scope, but I'll stay within whatever limits we collectively decide to adopt!) ;-)

As to MARIONET, I would hope you didn't take that too personally. It wasn't really "ruled" anything, just someone pointing out an atypical spelling, as others objected to my use of proper names. If it had been my word I would have shrugged histrionically, maybe acknowledged that it wasn't a common usage, and either offered it again, or proposed a substitute, or just moved on to whatever word was at the end of the list...but that's just my way. I play this game for my own amusement as much as for the group's.

What should we do with GRATIATION? That's another word of no-more-than-marginal validity. Shall we use it, or chuck it, or go on from INSTIGATE ?

Wow! I had no idea I'd managed to create a terminal blockage; I was just waiting for someone to continue and didn't think to try it myself. Doesn't anyone have some etymological fiber?!?!? If no one can make another word, do I win? And what's the prize, anyway? ;0)
