Technically, this really ought to be in Q&A, I guess; but I'm not back there yet, and this is hardly of great import anyway.

How do y'all pronounce this word?

a. pains taking

b. pain staking

I'll bet you're on b) to more readily accommodate the two sylLAbles in pain. ;-)

I'm with Zed about the smaller space, but I'll go with B. It's really hard to tell, however. Note that in A the S is voiced and in B it is unvoiced.

I'd think that, without some very good acoustic analysis equipment, it would be very hard to tell what any person is doing with this. It's not like, say, pine needle. Do you say 'pie needle', 'pine eedle', or 'pine needle'?

Yeahbut (miss you, Mav!) 'pine needle' is two separate words; it's easier to create a space in which to enunciate both ns if you want to.

I shall try to work on voicing that s more: I'm afraid I tend to say pain-staking, which is not what the word means!

My point was that it's easier to listen to yourself and tell which way you say pine needle, not that it's easier to say it one way or another.

I'm more pain-s'taking. Not quite a glottal stop, but certainly not a flowing "staking" - something like the similar bit in mistaking. Definitely a distinct pain though.
