Who's little lad Fredrick? This prenticed is like in the two dictionaries that have it.

What's the story of Fredrick ? A millipede? A spider of the thousand legs?
When Fredrick was a little lad
he had a web for habitat

" SONG -- RUTH

When Frederic was a little lad he proved so brave and daring,
His father thought he'd 'prentice him to some career seafaring.
I was, alas! his nurs'rymaid, and so it fell to my lot
To take and bind the promising boy apprentice to a pilot --
A life not bad for a hardy lad, though surely not a high lot,
Though I'm a nurse, you might do worse than make your boy a pilot.

I was a stupid nurs'rymaid, on breakers always steering,
And I did not catch the word aright, through being hard of hearing;
Mistaking my instructions, which within my brain did gyrate,
I took and bound this promising boy apprentice to a pirate.
A sad mistake it was to make and doom him to a vile lot.
I bound him to a pirate -- you! -- instead of to a pilot.

I soon found out, beyond all doubt, the scope of this disaster,
But I hadn't the face to return to my place, and break it to my master.
A nurs'rymaid is not afraid of what you people call work,
So I made up my mind to go as a kind of piratical maid-of-all-work.
And that is how you find me now, a member of your shy lot,
Which you wouldn't have found, had he been bound apprentice to a pilot. "

...

(I can cite chapter and verse if you want, but perhaps with the entirety visible that's no longer needed. If you like, you can hear it sung here )

You did not ban proper nouns in the rules, but we have mostly avoided them. On this page there are 2 in a row. They could be declared invalid and we could go back to RECEPTION. But I haven't tried PINKERTON yet...

By all means, return to RECEPTION.
Pinkerton is as useless as Princeton. Proper nouns out? Fine with me. Good luck.

I'm not routinely into this thread, although I occasionally read it.

As a matter of history, while Pinkerton was/is a proper noun, it became a common noun as well. An agent (spy or counter-spy) of the Pinkerton organization employed by the US Federal Government during the War of Northern Aggression, otherwise known as the War Between the States or the Civil War, became known as a "pinkerton."

if we're going to pink nits on this, Pinkerton is usually capitalized, after Allan Pinkerton (died 1884 American detective: private detective). AND proper noun, a noun that designates a particular being or thing, does not take a limiting modifier, and is usually capitalized in English.

I don't think you can call Pinkerton common. even derivatives such as Pinkertonian and Pinkertonism are capitalized.

OTOH, a quick perusal of the previous five(5!) pages of this thread reveals the following (I'm sure I missed some):

OK. if evolution ( feathers and furs and glossy scales and what did we get?) God/Creation, whatever your beliefs, had provided us with a nice cover of permanent fur, I would not have made this stupid remark. But as it is, are you sure it takes only two steps? How do you undo a U and add an E and an extra I in two steps only?

(I agree that Pinkerton should have been allowed, since the precedent for proper nouns was clearly set earlier. It's not Scrabble we're playing!)

I believe the only possible word is the most obvious one, namely adding S to form the plural. You can't make any others by adding, changing or deleting any letters I think?

GROWNUPS

Wait a minute. Let's go back to GROWNUP.

Change G to E and get UNPOWER.

It can be the obsolete Piers Plowman noun, or the verb for what you do when you remove the outboard motor from your boat...
