i'm looking for a good online vocabulary quiz. something that's not test prep, just a program that offers big words, their definitions. could you suggest a free website that might have something of that ilk?

As an addict of Funtrivia.com, I highly recommend their Word Wizard quiz. It's hourly, so you can have fun all day! It also keeps track of monthly scores. :0)

freerice.com it gets progressively harder, and the more you play the more rice gets donated.

Free Rice serves a double purpose and it's very nice.
I add my recommendations and thanks for reminding it tsuwm , I lost it in my big computer crash.
Edit: they have improved it by giving you a second chance some minutes later if you make a mistake . That proves to be very useful.
