My understanding is that it refers to the area of the body served by the gluteus maximus muscles... ;0)

I don't believe it's a "New Yorkism", or even confined to the USA. Here's a link from Phoenix: keister

Ass, rump, buttocks, etc. I suppose it's kind of slang.

But originally was used as: suitcase or bag....

The origin is unknown though

I agree with 2sleepy and don't think it's use is limited to NY, but perhaps more popular there.
