My understanding is that it refers to the area of the body served by the gluteus maximus muscles... ;0)

I don't believe it's a "New Yorkism", or even confined to the USA. Here's a link from Phoenix: keister
It supposedly has European derivation. :0)

But originally was used as: suitcase or bag....

The origin is unknown though

Certainly not a New Yorkism, used frequently on the Great Plains.
