A gudgeon is also linked to another unusual word, 'pintle', to make the fitting for a rudder on the transom of a boat. There are usually 2 of each & the pintles are upwards-pointing spikes on the boat with the gudgeons being rings on the detachable rudder which engage the pintles to secure the rudder to the stern.
