On the radio this morning the announcer said that "the quiz will be right next."

right next

Seems to be the 4th adverbial meaning in the A-H entry (link). It's use in the book is right next to me seems uncontroversial. Think of it as a variant of It's coming right up. Next was the superlative form of nigh whose comparative form became near.

"the quiz will be right next." I thought I felt some earth tremors early this morning. Now I know what they were: Canada bulldozing its way to the southern United States.
