I was wondering what the root of these words are; I understand Occidental means "Western" and Oriental means "Eastern". However, I saw them associated with two mountain ranges - both parallel and within proximity to each other.

Orient is from a Latin verb orior 'to rise', and occident is from occido 'to fall (down), set' (related to cadence, decadent, and cadaver).
Ceci n'est pas un seing.

You'll probably find that the two mountain ranges run roughly north-south and that the oriental one is east of the occidental one.
