I would have thought it meant the opposite of what it does - I guessed it meant pithy or of worth, like nugget, but it means of no worth, like negate and its cognitives!
When out of work for a couple of years back around the turn of the century (boy am I getting old, being able to say that!), I had some casual work at a food importing warehouse, and they imported from South Africa this honey almond nougat in great quantities. Once I got to take home a bag with several kilos in it that had partly melted in transit and couldn't be sold. Yum!
