The way dates are written varies by society, so other such dates would not even be abbreviated the same way (such as 01-02-03, which would be 02-01-03 in most of the world except the US). I think it's just another excuse for a party (or wedding!). Next year look out for 09-09-09. Similarly, the Chinese word for four sounds like the Chinese word for death, so 04/04/04 was considered an extremely unlucky day.
