In the run up to the word Orthography in the "A Word A Day" feature, there is this usage 'Ananya has been fitted with a pair of braces '.. is this correct usage? isn't fit an irregular verb? isn't 'Ananya has been fit with a pair of braces ' the correct usage?

Only in North America I think. In parts of the world where they speak real English, the past tense of fit is fitted, not fit.

Also, apparently, in Australia.

I think even people who prefer "It fit perfectly" to "It fitted perfectly" will use fitted when referring to the act of tailoring or outfitting - possibly because the adjective describing the outcome is fitted, e.g. fitted shirt, fitted suit, fitted sheet.

That is the way it works here. "After I fitted the splint it fit perfectly."
