Do you know the etymology of the word chipmunk? It sounds like it should be an Algonquian word, but it is aniks in our Mohegan lexicon.

A-H Dictionary offers in its the etymology that it is avariant of chitmunk < Ojibwa ajidamoonʔ 'red squirrel' ( link). Wikipedia offers a couple of other opinions, including Odawa jidmoonh ( link).
