Wow that's very interesting. I had some vague memory that Rivendell and a lot of the other scenery Tolkien describes, was based on scenery near where he lived in England, but this certainly does make sense.

However, in the minds of most movie goers, the real Rivendell is of course in New Zealand! Right Olly? ;\)
