As for the play and film with Ian McKellen. I haven't seen it but I love Ian McKellen and admire his work at the National Theatre, so I will have to catch up with it. Thanks for reminding me. There is an interesting interview with him at:

The Northern Broadsides production that I saw in the castle grounds, performed in pure "Northern" was quite magical.
Like any play, see several productions and decide for yourself.
