Lots of really neat definitions; good luck, you-all--this seems to be a very evocative word. I should note that one submission did not get posted because the sender pretty much hit the nail on the head. However, no new one was rec'd. [regret e]. But this person will get a couple of bonus points...

THRAPPLE

a.) noun. a pruning hook with rope attached that is thrown over branches and pulled to bring them within reach. From O.E. þrawan "to twist, turn writhe" and O.Fr. grapil, a hook.

b.) the sounds made by peacocks

c.) A process in tanning leather - pounding the hide to make it supple.

d.) To work your way against an oncoming throng of people by slapping, pushing and dodging. To Thrapple your way through a crowd.

e.) The sound of light, hoofed animals on a gravel track.

f.) An intermediate knot used in creating more complex decorative ones, such as the Monkey’s Fist and Masthead.

g.) N: throat: the human throat or windpipe
   V: throttle: to throttle somebody

h.) a mixture of bits of salted meat and dried apples preserved in rendered animal fats used on the American frontier in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

i.) The sound made by an outboard motor in brackish water.

j.) a slapping only fight, usually recorded on a mobile phone. See "Happy slapping".

k.) A mixture of nuts and roasted grains, sweetened with maple sugar, eaten as a snack.

l.) \Thrap"ple\, n. The mash left over from pressings to make apple cider or juice. Derived from the abbreviation of the phrase "thrashed apples", used by press operators.

m.) The underside of a sheep's hindquarters.

n.) n. a dessert made with fruit [usually berries] folded into a cream-based batter

I agree, some very clever and hard ones there, plus a couple of funny ones too!

You're guessing 'A' etaoin?

My guess is:
f.) An intermediate knot used in creating more complex decorative ones, such as the Monkey’s Fist and Masthead.

Sounds and foods,tools,and processes.

I wonder if there is a record on all the pruners and standers -by who fell victim to an ill-thrown thrapple. \:\)

So, the choosing:
Between light and heavy weight defs.
Hmm.. I like the concept of L. but I will choose: h.)

(A wild guess for the adventurers surviving in the wild)

a and l are so beautifully crafted that I want to vote for both of them, even though I don't think either is the right one. Kudos to the perps! I kinda like g as well but it's too close to Adam's apple so it's probably not correct, either.

That said, I'm going with f on a whim.

I'll vote D, just 'cause it brings up a great mental image of throttling and slapping your way through a crowd, which is sometimes exactly what you want to do! :0)

And here I was going to say it couldn't be B because that's not anything like the sound a peacock makes. It's more like 'help!'

I also don't like A because it's too much like a real definition to be the real definition.

I'll go with M

That's exactly why I didn't go for it either - it sounds more like "ooh-ah, ooh-ah." But on the other hand, it's often the simplest most unlikely definition that is true, so we may yet regret that decision...

That's it.!I always wondered what it is that makes the sound of peacocks ominous. But it is nothing foreboding,
they just cry: "Help!"

There are several that seem correct to me, but I must choose, so it'll be m.) for me.

Yes, sometimes a.) definition can just seem too good. Going with A.'s single-letter cousin, k.) .

Since my definition will, I'm sure, be voted for at least once (if it hasn't been voted for already), I'm going to return the favour and go for "n". I'm sure it tastes wonderful.

Nobody going for b,c,e,g,i,k, or l?? Only half the definitions have been voted for. Jackie's chances of getting points are looking good so far. And whoever made 'f' is laughing, unless it's the real one in which case Jackie is crying.

>Nobody going for b,c,e,g,i,k, or l??

actually, b and k do have votes; let's consider whether the others are worthy..

c) thrapple.. supple.. probly not
e) I'm having problems *picturing "light, hoofed animals on a gravel track", much less hearing them
g) I'm sorry, this doesn't look like a real def'n to me (so this is probly it!)
i) "sound made by an outboard motor in brackish water" - points for imagination
l) one of those that almost looks *too real

even paring it down to these, I still can't decide -- but I've made a case for g and i, haven't I? \:\)

having typed all that, I guess I'll plump for i.

Hey, Jackie, when's it over? I've been trying to avoid saying that! I guess the end of the day on the 4th.*; that'll make a week since the def.'s were posted.
*Unless all of the submitters vote before then; then I might just go ahead and do the tally.

Yeah, but if you-all vote by the end of YOUR fourth, you'll be sure to meet this deadline! :-) (I guess the North Americans west of here will just have to make certain they're not late!) Psst--I'd fit 'em in if it's at all possible.

Oh, I didn't, did I? Sorry about that--though frankly I prefer not to, for fear of giving away hints...

Anyway, here's the list of submitters, two of whom have not yet voted, and whom I've hollered at.

Branshea, the Pook, owlbow, olly, Father Steve, tsuwm, belMarduk, Aramis, AnnaStrophic, Fiberbabe, twosleepy, Faldage, and shanks.

Huh? Scrapple looks like bricks of shredded meat, if I may believe Google images.

I'm curious about that 'cream based batter' though.

This is SCRAPPLE-FROM-THE-APPLE: scrapple

It was just response to the recipe part, really. Scrapple is not fruity, or a dessert, according to what I've seen. There are variations, but it consists of pork scraps, and then some combination of cornmeal and liquid, pressed, sliced and fried. Or something like that! Basically, HAOAP. :0)

Okay, Bran, but YOU have to say what "santekraam" means!

HAOAP = Heart Attack On A Plate

There are many, many dishes that fit this; what's your favorite?!? :0)
