Sorry, it should be placed here of course.

This could just be fun. Because it just clever. To have five words of 14 letters long defined by 14 letters.
I'm no word nerd, as the alas dear absentee themilum would put it, and no expert at all, but I just like it.

acritochromacy (uh-KRIT-o-kro-muh-see) noun
Color blindness.
[From Greek akritos (undistinguishing) + chroma (color).]

I wonder does there exist a word for 'word blindness' as well or is that covered by 'dyslexia'?

And would there exist more than five?

No I'm almost certain there is a word for 'word blindness' that is more specific than dyslexia but I can't think what it is.

In the meantime I can make one up - how about arhemopsia or agraphopsia?

Ah, the first is a herbaceous perennial, the second a disorder of the nervous system.

Wouldn't that be illiteracy?

agraphic - characterized by inability to write
aphasic - characterized by inability to speak

illiterate - (narrowly) characterized by inability to read

but, are any of these what you mean by "word blindness," Bran?

and alexic is the adjectival form.

(M-W defines alexia as aphasia characterized by loss of ability to read)

I've looked it up on some sites here. Woordblind is the word we used and still use besides the modern 'dyslexia' for those reading and spelling problems. I think my question should be the other way around: Is there an English word for dyslexia?

well, jheem has given you a link to one source which defines alexia *exactly as word blindness, but you seem to have rejected that?

edit: here are some more

I think BranShea was asking if there is a non-technical word for dyslexia in English. I can't think of one.

No, I do not reject jheem's word (Excuse ZM , I overlooked the link though I'm not word blind (yet).)
So word blindness does exist as an English word , but it is differently applied. Not for dyslexia. Thanks.

Well, that was a long side step from color blindness , which I can't imagine, not in my worst dreams. Men seem to suffer more from that then women. Or would one not miss what one has never known?

Yes I was probably thinking of alexia or aphasia. Alexia does seem to be the word. I don't think BranShea was asking for a non-technical word, just whether there was another word more specific than dyslexia that covered it.

In hospital we use aphasia to mean the inability to use language. It can be receptive - unable to understand, expressive - unable to speak or global - both. At worst I have met people unable to use pictures or gestures either. Dysphasic indicates a lesser degree of impairment.

Today's word 'tintinnabulate' must be a trial for dyslectics as well as for people who suffer from stuttering and stammering.
It reminds me of one of tsuwm's hogwash words:'tiddledies'.

"The tiddledies were tintinnabulating in the tumbler".

(yes, I was asking about a non technical word for dyslexia, but never mind.)

Seems like the honorable Anu has to take some sharp curves to get his 14-letter words together. (keep nagging about them)

Brobdingnagian. \:\/ As somewhere pronunciation is discussed, this one seems to escape all possibilities.

By my honest soul, I can't pronounce it: Brobdingnagian.
It's the ngn that gets stuck in my throat like the clay we are molded from.

That's funny, I always imagined it pronounced Brob-ding-najian (rhymes with Asian). But then I don't know that I've heard anyone say it - it tends to be more of a written word (for obvious reasons perhaps).

As no one cared to find a 14 letter word that fits in, I'll finish the thing off neatly with:

panidiomorphic;

of igneous rocks ---------- Collins English dict.2007

that's why they call me the Rock of Gibralter

1. zeugmatography
2. zingiberaceous
3. zinziberaceous
4. zooarchaeology
5. zoroastrianism
6. zygobranchiate
7. zygophyllaceae

that's just the Zs, mind.

zingiberaceous : zinziberaceous
zinziberaceous : zingiberaceous

zooarchaeology
zoroastrianism

These two I know, the rest besides the two trivials is nowhere to be found, not even in your WWftD.

I can see trivial pursuit as your 14 letter definition
for the whole lot. "How's that?" they asked the umpire.

Okay, here're some 15:

zeugobranchiata
zincongraphical
zoogeographical
zoophytological

he he he... big surprise... I cheated! I tried to make the text white with the URL (so you more upstanding peeps wouldn't have to see it and burn your retinas...) but it didn't work. Could someone tell me how? Thanks! :0)

Sure--just click on Reply in the post you're replying to, instead of using the Quick Reply box at the bottom of the page. You'll get a whole range of special things to use; the big A will give you many colors to choose from. Put your text inside the brackets.

EDIT: Put your text in between the two sets of brackets.

in a bow to redundancy, you can even do the same from Quick Reply by clicking Switch to Full Reply Screen, then highlight the text you want to mask, and click the A (Color some text) button and choose white.
