Dear AWADers :
I opened my private messages and there it was ... the sender noted as "wordsmith."
I had sent off a message asking who the 2,000 poster is.
- And wordsmith responded!
The Poster 2000 Child is "satin."
All that reporting experience finally came in handy again. You want to know an answer? Ask the question !

And I did remember to say "please." Now I will send a Thank you reply!
Welcome SATIN. Hip Hip Hurrah!

Hmm. I wonder why that has never worked for me? I have sent a couple of private messages, and emailed as well, every time remembering to say "please", and have never had a response of any sort, other than an autoresponder letting me know that my email was received. Oh well, nobody ever said life was fair.

Aksherly, I pretty much have. It's only when those with whom he does deign to correspond mention it that the old petulance suppurates anew.

'Scuse me, but I beg to differ. There is one (at least)
here who has spoken to The Great And Powerful on the phone.
Literally had his ear.

Who is to say that the person who responded to wow's inquiry was really the real Anu? Anyone can poke a message out on a keyboard and anyone can sign any name they like.

Sincerely yours,

Elvis Presley

Not wishing to deviate but ....
....
Funny how some people seem to think that this bulletin board is about the discussion of words. Some people have suggested that ocassionally some people wander off the subject. As I never wander off the subject of words, I can't imagine what they are talking about. I'm sure that this thread demonstrates our total commitment to the subject of words. We'll have to re-visit it when we get to the next Millennium, poster MMM.

In the meantime, we could leave Father Steve on lookout duty in case there is a "second coming". I'm sure that no-one would doubt his credentials, WoW can keep the lamps trimmed.

Dear, dear Max ...
Do not be upset, you sweet thing, perhaps it is that my age and The Great Anu's respect for my hard-won white hair caused him to reply. Such a gentleman, our Anu.
Dear sweet Jackie : I am a rug under your feet. I think I just got lucky.
Much love to you all for your kind comments ... (Namaste emoticon to all)

Sorry to break into your celebration, but have any of you stopped to think about the name of this 2000th person? In wow's post the name is in lowercase as satin, easily disguised as cloth, but we fail to realize that if the first letter is put in the upper case we get Satin. Is there some ominous message in this? What kind of harbinger hath descended on us? Is some Evil going to come upon us in the coming months? Did someone intentionally plant that name there? Was it one of us? Is the name actually intended to mean a type of fabric? What is your favorite type of fabric? Am I asking useless questions?

Someone has asked what sacrifices wow expects since her elevation to priestesshood - I want to know what sacrifice she offered!

The wise one also says, "... respect for my hard-won white hair caused him to reply" What competition do you have to enter to get white hair as a prize? Mine has come with no visible effort on my part at all!

Jazz-o, in case you're raising an eyebrow, Rhuby's teasing was intended in the same vein as my telling Ted that none of us doubt whether he is sane. In other words, we know you can take it! Now as to evil coming to befall
us--I rather doubt it. The word satin has come to be closely associated with the word smooth, so I rather expect our 2000th subscriber to be a smooth operator!

As did mine! I guess discvovering that I appear to be the only ayleur Anu chooses not to reply to has merely accelerated the greying process, which started a decade or so ago, at the ripe old age of 23.

Mygrey hair comes being Irish-- and as one friend said-- all of the irish are
pigment challenged--challenged being the PC way to talk about it. We have very little pigment in our skin-- and have trouble keeping it in our hair!

My grey hair? did i forget to mention I am a natural blond! last i checked, most hair dyes uses organic compounds like ammonia and water and oxygen to dye hair-- so who is to say its not natural?

Obviously Max-- you must be part Irish!

and your grey hair!

as for height-- do a positive re-frame-- do your feet reach the floor? Well, then you're fine! If you measure from the top down, and make sure your feet reach the floor-- well what difference where you started? But if your feet didn't reach the floor--sure that could be a problem!

my father is 5' 1", and my mother 5' 2"-- at 5' 5" i am the tallest of all my siblings.
Once as i slipped into the last available seat in a movie theater, the "gentleman" behind me, exclaimed, Oh good-- someone short!-- I turn around and informed him i was not short-- (and i don't think i am, even as i admit I am not tall.. )

I'm sure that this thread demonstrates our total commitment to the subject of words
So am I [anirony feigning emoticon]. - But a total commitment need not be an exclusive commitment. Words are with us like our shadows. We need them even to wander off-thread.

Well, not quite true, since they are responsible for writing the briefs-- even if they do it on someone elses behalf-- but are they brief?
In US briefs! can run hundreds of pages--and be anything but brief!

(every time i type the word brief--its seems weirder and weirder-- i have to go look it up and learn something about it)

satin/Satin-------Jazz's post brought up some very interesting questions. I was wondering the same things when I read the initial question and answer of 2000 poster child. Which also brings to mind-----the fabric is smooth and silky and the name is also smooth and silky (at first)

Thanks Rhu for the nice things said to Jazz. I, for one, did not read any further posts and responded to Jazz's beautiful post. And then, after posting, read more posts-----What a sucker I am? No wonder my teenagers think I'm so stupid. Satin/Satan ---why did't I see this? But then again-------think about it----it is a disguise and Jazz could still come out on top!!!! Jazz, with me around, I will take the "hits" for you.

Brief------What an interesting chain of events. from "Anu-he answered me----to----satin/Satin/Satan----to----silks----to----Briefs (hmm I could add more silk to this one) but I think I will add-----another type:
Brief---------in German/Deutsch Brief means letter. So hence, whether it a letter is long or short, it is still a "Brief".

But you write, "every time i type the word brief--its seems weirder and weirder
I have the same problem with the word "de-brief" - it conjures up all sorts of naughty pictures, such that I can scarce forbear to grin.

That humorous combining form, 'de-'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a clever bit of logomachy making its way around the e-mail circuit.

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed and dry cleaners depressed? Laundry workers could decrease, eventually becoming depressed and depleted!

Even more, bedmakers will be debunked, baseball players will be debased, landscapers will be deflowered, bulldozer operators will be degraded, organ donors will be delivered, software engineers will be detested, the BVD company will be debriefed, and even musical composers will eventually decompose.

On a more positive note though, perhaps we can hope politicians will be devoted.

Whilst those who are no longer news-worthy will have been defamed, no doubt.
But the really burning question is:

If we are definite, is that a proof of the existence of eternity?

Only after she has been inducted...
----------------------------------------------------------
For some years prior to 01-01-01 (I still love that!),
our medical insurance required us to obtain the approval of our "primary care physician" before going to a specialist, who could be any one from a pre-approved list. Now, though,
we have a new insurance plan, and our main Dr.'s office
has a list of different specialty practices we can go to
without prior approval--as long as we go to one particular place named in each specialty. The reason, they tell me, is because, under this plan, these particular
offices are "capitated". I've been afraid to ask.

Capitation
I hate to insert a serious (or at least non-risible) note into this entertaining exchange, but I can tell you that capitation is a word used in the medical insurance (and by extension, medical, since they are now firmly joined at the hip) field. It derives from capita as in per capita and denotes a count of patients, or subjects of a study or statistical group. Capitation is almost everything in the managed care field, as it determines funding from govt. and other agencies, reimbursements from insurers, charges by medical service providers, etc. (This courtesy of my wife who works in that field, specifically in the arcane field known as UR/QA - Utilization Review / Quality Assurance)

Yes, and in education, too. The Brit Government pays this University - and all the others, of course - a capitation fee for every student who we enrol from within the EU.

In the UK, Health Insurance is not synonymous with healthcare (only a small percentage of people are insured) but the word capitation is used in health, as in education, to pay general practitioners (primary healthcare doctors) based on the number of patients on their roll.

Incidentally, this is how much the NHS thinks we're worth, per year:
Capitation Fees (March 1999 figures):
Patient under 65 years of age: £17.65;Patient between 65 and 75: £23.25; Patient over 75: £45.05

Even if Rapunzel should become deduckted, I hope she will not be dis-tressed.

Dear TEd (otherwise known as Sparteye),

Well, I'll have to ask wwh about that. I don't know whether he has any ducks. If he does, I hope no one takes them away from him! But that would be how you deduckabill.

Dearest, duckless, Bill:

Your favorite snack is a box of quackers, right?

Just wade, wood you, and take a gander at whatever comes next.

Jazz,

Just thought that you should know, there really is a "satin" that is not just one of the old guards trying to be cute. It was a surprising fluke that I happened to be the 2000 (edition) addition to this intriging group. Just for all future references, there is nothing satanic in satin. It is a divergence on the actual spelling of my real name.

Satin writes: It is a divergence on the actual spelling of my real name.

How very said. I rather enjoyed the mental image of her conjured by the old Johnny Mercer song:

Cigarette holder which wigs me
over her shoulder, she digs me.
Out cattin' that satin doll.
Baby, shall we go out skippin ?
Careful, amigo, you're flippin',
speaks Latin that satin doll.
She's nobody's fool so I'm playing it cool as can be.
I'll give it a whirl but I ain't for no girl catching me,swich-e-rooney.
Telephone numbers well you know,
doing my rhumbas with uno
and that'n my satin doll.

I didn't mean to make everyone so curious. Truly I am a very open individual. Just ask Musick. This is my very first time in any chat situations and I was being cautious.
Sorry for the confusion.

satin sweetie, we were but teasing. We are so used to digging up info on words (and just about anything else) that we simply cannot let a mystery go unsolved, tenacious bunch that we are. If curiosity really killed the cat then we would have very few animal owners in the lot and our animal name thread would be short indeed.

I have been proved wrong on one point. I thought your sibling was a girl because girls will often refer to their sisters (younger or older) as siblings and generally only to younger brothers as siblings. Don't know why, but this is what I have noticed.

We are really glad you have joined us. Remember it is all in fun...a few months ago we were all intrigued about RhubarbCommando.

... but now noone cares either way??

forgive me, i'm feeling ornery and couldn't help myself.... and it probably only sounded strange to *me*....

for the record, *i* still find rhubarbcommando (and the rest of you, as well!) most intriguing

I didn't mean to make everyone so curious.

Rest assured, you didn't. As Jackie said, we're an incurably curious lot, and I feel that I owe you an apology for directing that inquisitiveness toward you. It just seemed like the sort of challenge that many of us here thrive on. It was wrong of me to pose such a challenge without giving sufficient thought to how much discomfort it generate in its "victims", for which I am sorry. Now that you have survived an unintended baptism of fire, I hope that you will soon discover why everybody who posts here regularly, regardless of their board-assigned designation, is truly an addict.

Salaam

Now wait a minute, Bel.. who says I'm not a girl, or even younger than satin . Someone must be leaking "top-secret personal" information (it was probably me ). Was it something to do with losing my marbles?. I know two "other" females named "Kevin" from high school days (one sp. Keven the other sp. Kevan).

satin - I'm the wrong girl to ask

Possibly, S.M.--though you must have delivered a pretty good Sting to somebody, to deserve that tree fluff fire remark!
