"Loose" for "lose" has been with us for a while, but I wonder if its appearance on the BBC's site indicates a growing acceptance.

where? a search of that page does not show "loose" anywhere.

I guess they were tipped off. The word appeared in a link to antoher story. That link has been moved, and the text of the link has been chhanged. Here's what it says now:
