"...because it blends whimsy and new technology."

Next year's word would be a toss up between fire and wheel except those words are still popular so they're disqualified.

Kind sir, could you explain to me what the word "yawpish" means?
So that I might understand what is so special about the word
"wOOt-woot"? ( Except that it is an exclamation of happiness, which might be special enough. )

OneLook does not acknowledge the word. Neither does Urban.

There's a verb, to yawp 'to cry, bark', which is a variant of to yelp. As with many verbs, this, too, has been nominalized (nouned if you'd rather). From there, it is a short hop-skip to adjectival derivation by use of the suffix -ish. That's all conjecture, and tsuwm has suggested elsewhere that it might mean 'noisy, clamorous'.

The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me--he complains of my gab and my loitering.
I too am not a bit tamed--I too am untranslatable;
I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.

-- Song of Myself, Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass, 1855

Look up w00t with zeroes in UrbanDictionary - 33 definitions go on for pages - or you can link to it from the front page today.

Walt Whitman circa 1891
"I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable,
I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world."

One might also count the all important "YOP!" from Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hears a Who" as a yawp.

TVR, in retribution it seems, has instituted its own poll regarding w00t, to wit:

W00t should be included in the next, the twelfth, edition of Merriam-Webster's.

0 If it is, I'll burn my copy.
0 Good Lord, I hope not.
0 Sure, why not?
0 W00t, w00t!

here's a hotlink should you actually care to vote.

-joe (it's in the free matter) friday

p.s. - the results seem to give a good indication of TVR's.. <ahem> slant.

it's a word, it has meaning, it gets used by many people. why shouldn't it be in the dictionary?

Tell that to the boys at TVR, eta -- btw the motto over there is "A society is as lax as its language." You get the picture.

I think we must be skewing their results. I wonder if this means that they'll soon shut down their poll?!

Word of the Day: wave front
Word of the Hour: Banff

Costello: The Word of the Minute is intermittent.
Abbott: Yes, but what is it?
Costello: It's intermittent.
Abbott: Yes, of course it is. It changes every minute. But what is it now?
Costello: Intermittent.
Abbott: No, not in a minute, now!
Costello: It already has. It's gone now.
Abbott: I know it's gone but what's the new word?
...
