It's amazing the amount of literature that was written during the Tudor, Elizabethan, and Jacobean periods in England, before the advent of a standardized orthography. Didn't seem to stop Shagsbeard from penning masterpieces when he never even signed his name twice the same way. I'd say the genius of English literature just barely survived having been written in the past couple of hundred years using one of the worst, un-thought-out spelling systems extant. Every time a grammatohooligan does a spit-take while reading a greengrocer's apostrophized signage, a puppy or kitten is killed at the pound.
