When someone sits on the floor in a cross-legged position is there another word for it? (something like akimbo?)

We use the word kleermakerszit for it: tailors-sit or position.

tailor

We used to call it "Indian style" but I guess that's fallen into disuse.

We were told: "Sit like an Indian not like a W!"

Technically, half-lotus has one foot on top of the thight. You'd also (try) bringing both feet closer into your core. Another close-but-no-cigar is Burmese position - both feet are on the floor but one foot is in front of the other so your legs aren't crossed at the ankle.

So, alas, no magic three syllable word.
I've tried them all out now. The half lotus is alright and exotic, but not comfortable. (Pulling your foot up to your core). The Burmese, also exotic and far easier. The Indian and the tailor are winners, cause they demand no prescription at all.
Would you say then: Sitting Indian style? Or in Indian style?
And I'm really curious what "Sit like a W!" means.

Bran, I suspect it means legs spread and bent so as to form a "W"

That looks more like a gymnastic effort than like sitting to me, Dale. Hopefully Myridon will still read this and be willing to explain the W.

Sometimes a child will sit with their bottom between turned out feet thus making a w of their legs. (actually more like an M) This can cause eventual knee and hip problems if it becomes a habit so it is discouraged.

Thanks Zed, professional explanation. The capital M makes it clear. That's useful knowledge regarding my granddaughter's school stories and sitting habits.
