Captcha

It's an oldish term, and, I believe, a trademark.

I was aware of the turing test and I had encountered CAPTCHA's before but for some reason had not associated a name with them nor had it crossed my mind to give them a name.

Slightly bending the topic, I delved deeper into the world of 'AI' and decided to have a chat with an 'autobot' (a piece of software designed to have a conversation with you)

I'm the human by the way.

Human: you don't know who I am
ALICE: You are unknown person, seeker.
Human: seeker of?
ALICE:"There's a seeker born every minute" -- Firesign Theater.
Human: I wasn't born a seeker
ALICE: Perhaps I misunderstood. What were you?
Human: a human
ALICE: Congratulations. I am robot.
Human: thanks for clarifying
ALICE: NO problem.

I also asked it(Alice) how long it had been doing what it was doing and it said "about 20 miles"

How could you teach a computer context?

1996?

"The term CAPTCHA was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper (all of Carnegie Mellon University), and John Langford (of IBM)." [Wikipedia CAPTCHA, accessed 17.viii.2007] It seems to have been without a name until four years later.

Here's an article about a captcha with a difference. I am glad it's not a site I need, because
I would never get in.

Looks rather exclusive to me!
But, if theres a need?
Maybe a combination of text recognition software and an autobot could work it out!

Perhaps a cryptic word puzzle to get your word a day?
