I was wondering if anyone is aware of a word tool that I could only imagine to call a "slant thesaurus," that is, an online thesaurus that would return words closely related but not quite the same as the search term. An example might be that results for the word "casino" would include "slots," "roulette," "gambling," and so on. Does such a thing exist?

Welcome, mm. :-) Could you clarify your request a little bit? would return words closely related but not quite the same as the search term sounds to me like what a typical thesaurus does. However, that's not what your example indicates. From your ex., I would think that looking up casino in an encyclopedia would suffice.

I think you're talking about a so-called "word finder". I used to have one, until someone "borrowed" it about 5 years ago. It listed hundreds of words under categories, and sub-categories like, "sailing" (knots, etc,), "military" (guns, etc.), "weather" (clouds etc.) and so on. I think it was made for crossword buffs, but it was a useful reference tool when you couldn't even remember a word closely relating to the word you were looking for, and was interesting to browse too.

Blast that infernal borrower of books.

Edit: Here it is:

Thanks, everyone, for the help! The OneLook Reverse Dictionary and RhymeZone’s “related words” were both extremely helpful.

AnnaStrophic, I had been to the Visual Thesaurus before, and while I love its interface, I just can’t bring myself to buy a subscription!

Jackie, sorry for the confusion. Perhaps I should have said “indirectly related” instead of “closely related.”

And Hydra, the Word Finder sounds promising. Best of luck in tracking down your analog copy! Know of a digital version?
