Odd that in a string apparently about today's word, no notice was taken of the quote that further shows Dostoyevsky to have been a raving lunatic. <<<

He was a raving epileptic tragic lucide writer, but no lunatic.

For children are healing and wonderful to be with when they have not been spoiled or neglected or both. When you protect them as long as you can from child predators such as the game-toy-and hollow agressive child cartoon world.
Not that they should be excluded from all those things , but at least be guided by mesured exposure.

Children are wonderful philosophers when you take time to listen.
And surprising and adventurous and funny and well, just nice. And I hope we are still allowed to love and cherish children without being called a pedophile.
Sorry, it does not belong in this thread but I could not let a man who loved children be called a lunatic without reacting.

Not pretending to have read that much [mostly due to early discouragement], but Notes From The Underground does not greatly help his case for sanity. Ironically, it actually made that quote surprising to discover.

Well, he was a tormented and certainly not a happy-go-lucky man.
But he was not insane or a lunatic and that he found comfort in the company of children does not make him more insane then he wasn't in the first place. But I'm sure this is no point to make a real point of. The quote surprised me too.(pleasantly) At least something to give some lightness in his life.

How strange. Our world has evolved to the point that men can no longer speak of the love of our children for fear of being called "pedophiles".

What a stupid, insipid language we all speak.

Regarding the healing presence of children. We recently had an extended visit (planned as a mere lunch) with an elderly and rather frail friend of the family and the conversation was rather dry and adult. I was concerned that my 7 year old niece was bored but when we left she told her mom that she didn't want to leave because "he's lonely. Can we come back and visit him again?"
