OP The clue is in the scientific usage. Originally the common definition was "to come to light" as in "although it was long hushed up, it finally transpired that the CEO of Continental Draugsvold had been dealing with crime bosses in his attempts to keep his company afloat." It's been used to mean "happen" or "occur" since the early 19th century but this usage has been frowned upon by many prescriptivists. I just wanted to see if anyone would spontaneously come up with the "come to light" definition.
