This is a pretty tough vocabulary test. Try me Good luck, and no cheating! I scored a disappointing 174 out of 200. The test contains a lot of really weird and wonderful and worthless words. I expect tswum will ace it. For your information: The "Wild Guess" option is a non-answer, not a coin-toss.

And wow. Check out these high scores: High scores. Someone called Allan C. Jackson III got 200 out of 200. And he's 14 years old.

Nice one. You're right up there with Michele Petri (Heart of Illinois Mensa).

The beauty of having low expectations: I was delighted with my 169. I also took issue with some of the "same" pairings. I think that "similar" and "dissimilar" would have been better labels than "same" and "opposite".

Some of them look to me like neither. As if they asked
orange articulate O same O opposite
But I guess that show what I know

OK, 179 out of 200 with 3 unanswered. So I went back and, without changing any of the ones I did answer, I answered the 3 that I didn't and boosted it up to 181. Edit: Added For your information: The "Wild Guess" option is a non-answer, not a coin-toss. Huh? Of my 15 wild guesses I got ten right.

  -ron (not so) o.
edit: well yeah, the wild guess column was for your own edification

I look at mine as 164 out of 173 with 27 not answered (not 164 out of 200), and I agree that there were a bunch of words that didn't seem to be along the same dimension for a choice between concordance or difference to be meaningful.

As far as all the über-arcane words go, you either know them or you don't, so it's a no-brainer.
For me, the really tricky questions were the antonym pairs with one having a grapheme that is a synonym for its partner. For example, at first blush the pair 'truckle/withstand' is very garden-pathy. Truckle means "toady" but it also puts in mind "suffer" and then "tolerate" which prepared me to see "withstand" as a synonym.
I also paused on 'dissimulation/hypocrisy' for a long time before clicking 'opposite'. My reasoning was: Hypocrisy is demonstrative, dissimulation is disguised. It was wrong.

Interesting and really challenging and difficult, sometimes I knew neither of the two words I had to choose between. Not a total disaster. I expected to stay under 100. Anyway an interesting 'game'.
I had 136 out of 200 and 4 questions unanswered and did not know you could go back. But with chance that would not have me brought any more than 140.
Now I'll have fun copying the words and look up the mystery ones. Educating! Good test! Thanks, Hydra.

Smug Aramis scored a mere 170 after rushing through it. It is an interesting test.

But to be honest I must say at this point that when I marked and counted the words that I would have to look up, I came to the amount of 186 out of the 400.So if this test were really testing one's knowledge of English, I think it would have to be doubted. How can I have 136 good answers (meaning I would by that have understood 272 words rightly) when I must look up 182 words I do not know? 272 + 182 = 454 (many words I guessed through French and Italian ) Of course it's useful. I'm going to learn 182 new words.

I got 170 too, although I'm sure I had some lucky guesses.
