I must apologise for throwing everybody off the scent by my misuse of "elliptical". I know little of geometry, and care even less. I read the works of Lewis Carroll, not the maths treatises of Charles Dodgson.

Anyhow, if I can be forgiven my mathematical ineptitude, is there anyone who might be able to see past the ignorant phrasing question and offer an answer to it?
