It sounds a bit like a ceilidh (kayley)which traditionally is an informal musical and story telling get-together of friends and neighbours in the Scottish Highlands. A dying custom because of the dilution of the Gaelic culture by southern immigrants. Now,a 'ceilidh' generally means the same as a concert or an evening of arranged entertainment. Not so much fun really.

The word was borrowed from its earlier connotation ca. 1960-61, starting on Eastern college campuses. Pete Seeger, Lee Hays and others in the professional folk music scene of that time are probably responsible.

Happy new year to you two! May snow fall on the Scottish Highlands and may Elderjohn stay forever young. There must be some link between Hootenanny and the Gealic musical join in tradition. Though the words do not give any clue.
Hootenanny reminds me sooner of Father Steve's Hootchie Cootchie Man.
But Hootchie Cootchie Man lived long before Hootchienanny. This makes no sense at all.

I'd agree with the similarity of ceilidh: Hootenanny is to bluegrass (possibly US folk-revival), as ceilidh is to Celtic music, as jam session is to jazz. I would consider it incorrect to use the word for broader folk music, allowing that other traditions might creep into play during a hootenanny. Perhaps as salon is to literature?
The first two might have dancing: I'll leave it to the jazzbo's to let us know whether there's ever dancing at a jam sesesion.
