Not very long after I stumbled across this marvellous forum, we passed a milestone, as I saw it then, of 200 registered users. Now I see we are about to hit 2000. How should we celebrate this? Should we even deign to notice it? My earlier reference to what I saw then as a significant stage in our development produced but a deafening silence. Is this to be my fate yet again, as the harbinger of notable events? Ah well, I can but try, and don't look to me for any psrty tricks, either. My stock of Cardhu is seriously depleted. (I refer to another thread where folk are currently defining their preferences in certain malt products.)

Re the above ...
For "pstry" read "pastry", "pasty", "party" or whatever. I don't much mind. The wine is in, the wit is out ... Mr Penfold, you have a lot to answer for! And alas, no, it wasn't.

So long as you don't try sating it with a mouthfull of Cardhu - it would spoil both! Remind me to tell you about my trip to the Cardhu distillery, sometime: aaaaaaaaaaaah !!

Well done Lusy for spotting the MM. Are we allowed to celebrate now or do we have wait until MM + 1?!

lusy, my Darling--obviously the other milestone slipped past us unawares. Thank you for trying again, Lovely One. What do you suggest, then, Sweetheart? I thought at first you were inviting us to your house for a party, but then saw that you are out of Cardhu (whatever that is). Got any ideas? We could bring our own bottles, I suppose, to wherever. I saw your post about a prize for the 2000th subscriber. Good idea! Gee--maybe they could receive a free subscription to AWAD!

But do we celebrate the bi-millennium when we hit 2000 or 2001? Oops. This sounds like another thread we had here!

jo asks: Are we allowed to celebrate now or do we have wait until MM + 1?!
[sighing patiently emoticon] When the 2000th user registers we will have 2000 registered users*. If we were counting years we would have to wait for the 2000th year to be over before we could say that 2000 years had passed since...
*We have to wait for the 2000th user to finish registering before we count that lucky individual.

In fact, if we had more than one such venue, the competition could be intense.

Aaaaaah, indeed, Rhubarb C. But I'm surprised you remember much about it. My own memory is a bit hazy on this matter. Perhaps a good venue for our MM and MM+1 celebrations (well, why not both?) would be Knockando. And if you can pronounce that correctly you get free access to the Marquis.

(Lengthy pause) What, no blinding light? No heavenly choir? No flights of angels bearing frankincense and Cardhu? Nothing? Well, I'm off then ... mumble ... grumble ... exit lusy, pursued by Gladly. Hey, I just noticed after posting this — I'm now a member! How about that!

As I logged in just now, I notice the magic number of registered users is 1999! One more to go, folks... and my question is, do we find out who exactly is the 2000th person to register?
I hope everyone celebrates the event as it indeed deserves to be!

It seems to me it's a little like a small town here, (and I've lived in my share of small towns.) We have this thread celebrating the 2000th member and another thread complaining about the food conversations. (Which to me is very small town) I think it's a really great group. And just like a small town, the better it is the more people want to live here.

I tend to agree Ladymoon. But my beef with the sandwiches is not the topic per se - I just hate to see the same stuff over every thread, no matter what other people are trying to talk about. By and large, it's a very happy little town.

So in honor of the 2000th member, you're all invited to my house for a feast (with lots of non-starchy vegetables for the diabetics). Where I will feed everyone to the point they won't even want to think about food again. Thus killing two threads with one bird.
This providing you can get here because I'm currently snowed in and waiting to be hit with the next CA rolling blackout.
I'm going to give up on the spellchecker, It suggested diabolic for diabetic.

Marianna has a great question here folk! Who, indeed, was the Poster 2000 Child? Would Anu know? Would he tell? Let us all face towards Columbus and invoke The Great Muse. wow

Some say the explorer is buried at El Faro Colon in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Others say he rests at the Seville Cathedral in Spain. Mysteries, mysteries.

Most evidence points to Columbus still being buried in Santo Domingo Cathedral, and some people say it was his son's remains that were transferred to Havana and then back to Seville. Given the confusion, let all and sundry face towards Madrid and its central Plaza de Colón, where there is indeed a most famous statue of the great traveller, arm extended, pointing -of course- at the Americas.

I had a feeling you were talking about Columbus, Ohio, but I didn't want to interrupt the search for the bones of a great explorer. Anyway, I don't think Anu lives in our great capital city. His personal website says that he lives on the shores of Lake Erie, so I would guess that he lives in the Cleveland area.

"It is a lovely Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, but the word master is neither golfing nor fishing, nor taking his ease. Seated at one of those desks that you put together from a kit, peering intently into the screen of his PC, Anu Garg scrolls through a backlog of e-mail while I look over his shoulder." That's the opening graph in the Smithsonian Magazine article (December 2000, page 67) by Rudolph Chelminski. I thought that located him at AWADwork. Silly me. wow

Well, there's a bit of a discrepancy there, because Columbus is about 100 miles from Lake Erie, and that's without a freeway going directly north. So either Anu moved, he's lying, or he's got quite a commute to work every day.

I'm not saying that I don't believe what the Smithsonian Magazine said, I'm just confused about how Anu can live 100 miles away from where he works without having a personal jet. And seeing as AWAD appears to be non-profit, I doubt he has a personal jet.

Dear Children ~
It is all so simple. These conflicting bits of data on which you hang are further evidence that THERE IS NO ANU! Live with it. He is a fiction. Anu is a psychological projection of your need for order and decency in a universe where there is too little of either. Anu is a dream, a wish, a child's imagining.
And pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

I perused the the article further and found the author talks about travel to Ohio where Anu has an "ordinary PC in the spare bedroom of a two-bedroom apartment in a rambling complex overlooking an artificial lake." The author says says that "after lunch Garg took me on a tour of Columbus and .... the well equipped public library ..... (and) the new science museum on the banks of the Scioto River." That doesn't sound like Anu lives too far out of town. Do these landmarks give you a way to locate him better? Father Steve : Oh, ye of little faith! wow
