Did you read the link? The M-W dictionary, instead of choosing a word of the year (as many dictionaries and language organizations do), is asking people to submit the word they think best reflects 2006.

1. Merriam-Webster is (arguably) the biggest publisher of dictionaries in the known universe. 2. Every year, for the last several, they have picked a Word of the Year, based on word searches at their web site. 3. This year, as a change of pace, they have thrown the selection process open to vote by their users(?). 4. They probably expect the choices to be somewhat topical; i.e., relating to the year 2006.
