>Pissing match.
I like that.
The UD specialises in cataloging slang and sweary words. This linguistic terrain is so very protean, rich, creative and varigated that a mere 581 new words a day—from the millions and millions of Netizens in the multicultural, global theatre of cyberspace—is somewhat underwhelming.
And, I maintain that it is a valuable resource. No, I won't find the UD much use if I am trying to get through Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, but if I'm playing an on-line game and someone tells me that I have been "pwned", and I have no idea what they are talking about, the UD is my friend.
>Untested
It didn't occur to me to point this out earlier, but, if I am not deceived, the UD uses a voting-system to determine the order in which definitions appear—a kind of epistemological democracy, if you will.

I think you need to re-read my post again, Hydra. I never said that the UD wasn't valuable. my suggestion to Dale was that he do a bit more digging before he asked a question about a word. I was trying to offer an answer to z's response to Dale.
and I thoughtfully disagree: 3500+ words a week is a lot of new words/defs. and I offer that most of those words will not make it into the vocabularies of the general populace.
as far as voting is concerned, who is doing the voting? are we sure it's not mostly the same folks who submitted the word? just asking.

It seems, etaoin, that in this particular pissing match, you are standing downwind of me.
It is obvious from the way you are speaking that you equate "newly added" with "newly coined". But you fail to see that the number of words added per day will include a percentage of words that have been around a while and are being added belatedly to the UD. In other words, the number of words added to the UD is not representative of the number of words being coined.

You said that most of the words in the UD were "new and untested", and implied they were therefore unworthy of being discussed on these boards. Would you still have me believe that that leaves open the possibility you believe the UD is a valuable resource?

Thanks for all this fuzz about Urban Dictionary. This site will be a great help for understanding the words not to be found in the Ordinairy Dictionary. Thanks again Dale and ZM, even indirectly, there always someone who benefits from stirring up some dust.

You believe that most of the words in the Urban Dictionary are new and untested. Based on the rate at which words are added to the UD, you believe words are being invented more or less haphazardly, and then voted for by their inventors. You believe most of these words "will not make it into the vocabularies of the general populace." You believe that these words should not be discussed here freely, but that anyone wishing to discuss a word from UD here must first try Google. You do not deny that the Urban Dictionary is a valuable resource.
OK, etaoin. I see how it is. I enjoyed our little talk. Be a good boy.

Hydra, Bran: Thank you for te support, a rare commodity these days
Of course UD isn't a reliable indicator of usage, it's not that kind of site. However, it's always a good sign when several similar defs are submitted and esp if they get the larger nos. of thumbs-up
