Steve: I don't quite agree with the saying

There are three kinds of words to express an idea; the commonplace, the expressive, and the snobbish. In this case the plebian "convince" might often be used in an application where the more expressive "persuasive" or "exhortive" would convey the idea more clearly; while "proceleusmatic" would be snooty

Al, mav: "convince" is diminutive because it's used by the smaller folk
