Another word I had trouble finding was "truism" when the clue was "platitude".
In French, platitude means something that is boring or lacking originality, or a conversation strewn with banal, insignificant comments. They aren't necessarily true comments, just boring.
A truism, as I understand it, is an obvious, incontrovertible truth.
