That would not be the gegenschein, but the zodiacal light. They have the same cause - sunlight reflecting from interplanetary dust on the plane of the ecliptic. The zodiacal light appears close to the sun, thus is only visible just before sunrise (and possibly just after sunset). The gegenschein is opposite the sun and is very faint which explains why it wasn't discovered until 1854.
