I have an interesting observation about cookies. If you have too many of them, your Google Advanced Search algorithm won't work right
But if you delete them none of the sites in which you are accustomed to participating will work correctly. You find yourself required to log in every time, it has forgotten your password, you are unable to edit your own followups, and you can no longer refresh its home page

I've never had to log in again every time, Dale--just the first time. Then it goes back to normal for me.

Jackie thank you again for your remarkable forbearance and tact in the face of my world-class PC incompetence. I have lately discovered that one of the reasons I found it necessary to log in repeatedly is that I can never remember whether my handle is dalehileman, Dale Hileman, dale hileman, or DaleHileman; and if I enter the wrong one, then on subsequent visit I find I'm not properly logged in

Eta: Sometimes logout happens automatically when Anu or whomever is performing housekeeping or whatever it's properly called. But what usu happens is that I inavvertently click on the "logout" link

Those of you who do a lot of computer work and/or play may find an application called QuicKeys useful. It is essentially a macro engine that lets you create keyboard shortcuts for complex sequences that get used over and over. For example, if your sign in name is "Joe" and your password is "123", then your sign-in process involves typiing j-o-e then hitting TAB and then typing 1-2-3. You could assign this sequence to, say, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-F1, and it would type this out in the blink of an eye whenever you press Ctrl-F1. It's capable of doing fairly complex things, and key sequences like the above are but one example. I have yet to figure out how to get it to write good hogwash definitions though. It's available for both Mac and Windows. It's about $100 from most sources e.g. Amazon.com. LINK

Firefox and I suppose some other newer browsers (I think later versions of IE do this) will fill everything in for you. Faldage and I both use the same computer for this board (and other places that require log-ins): to log in here, he types F and his entire handle and password come up. I type A and the same thing happens for me.

Er--how in the world do you go about even finding a different browser, let alone getting one into your computer? I just use the one that came with it--it had never dawned on me that there was any other choice. (I do know that they have been mentioned before, but I still don't know anything about them.) And, why would I want a different one? That is, why would one be better than another?

I think it's a mac OSX thing, though I'm surprised it's not also in Windows. it's called Keychain. if a site has a form to be filled in, Safari (or Firefox) will ask you if you want it to remember the info.

It does it for me on my Windows machine at work. In fact, the one at work will sometimes ask if I want the whole thing remembered and if I say yes all I have to do is hit enter.

Although plenty of sites do remember, exactly as you describe, not all of them permit this. I have one credit-card site, for example, that makes me type in the entries every time. But most work as you said.

Hmmm. I'm using OSX10.4.4 - but still it doesn't auto-fill, on that one site mainly. There are a few others which will do my name but not my password. I _assumed_ the function had been specifically disabled by the site - am I being naive, and haven't activated the keychain somehow?

check your Safari Autofill prefs, and see what you've got. you can edit individual sites to some extent there. then check Keychain, which is in the Utilities folder in Applications. further editing can be done there. you might need to delete the prefs for that site, and then log-in again to get the "save" dropdown.
or, as I think about it, I believe I have a banking site that makes me log in each time. a security thing I would expect.

Autofill is set full-speed-ahead. I guess it must be local site security after all.
But Safari, and for that matter Navigator, and even Internet Explorer on the PC, all remember my AWAD credentials. Still, I try not to log out anyway.

It's similar to installing any other kind of software. And, why would I want a different one? That is, why would one be better than another?Oh, as many reasons as there are people in the online world. I tend to use Firefox or Mozilla because I started out surfing the Web with Netscape and Mosaic, from which both Mozilla and Firefox are descended. Some people eschew MS Internet Explorer 9sometimes called Exploder) because of Bill Gates abd his presumed / perceived evil. Some us operating systems that MS IE won't run on, e.g., Linux / BSD. Etc. Mostly, you hear that Firfox and Opera are faster than Explorer. And it has been my experience that they are. Certainly, they are smaller. Explorer is also too complicated, for my taste: there's a limit to how much of this sort of stuff I want to have to learn. And, best I can figure, it is too inflexible with plug-ins; you cannot, for example, turn of Flash (least that I've found), and are forced to watch all those dreadful ads and flashy, sparkly doo hickies.
Mozilla also has a third browser called Camino, which is related to Mac's Safari, me thinks.
Opera's good but, last I checked, if you don't want to pay, you have to endure a small, quiet, advert in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. This, however, can be covered with a post-it on which you can write your to do list.

..and, for now at least (until usage renders it worthwhile for the hackers to attack), Firefox seems less prone to hacker attacks than IE. spot checks of Browser Share at wwftd show Firefox usage up in the 25-30% range now, which is about double from just four months ago. edit: is that link password protected?

I like Camino, though I usually use Safari, and occasionally FireFox. I wouldn't use a browser without tabs...
