purchasing a new dictionary and am baffled by the number and kind of dictionaries on the market. starting back to college; english major; any comments/opinions on which is the best???

Probably depends on what you're looking for in a dictionary. I like AHD for etymologies and OED for word histories. YMMV.

My prof recommended the current edition of Webster's New Collegiate back in the mid 80's.
