Apparently an Australian import. Used in various ways, meaning to flatter, to backfire, or to utter nonsense, to demean
Googling the expr without UK au nz kiwi nu za aussie australia brit british cockney yields 612 hits
1. It has been my experience that when an expr has become current and common that it gets dropped almost anywhere the user seems to think it might fit, suggesting it's fairly well established onshore (U.S.); do you not agree
2. Which is the most common onshore usage

go to "My Home" up at the top, then under "Main Configuration", you'll see: "Personal information, email, password, etc.". Geographic Location is dwon near the bottom.

Scottish dialect mugs? (google ad)
Dale, what sort of thing would go in the *? Like fellow USn etaoin, I've never heard it unless there's something lurking in the *.
And your onshore/offshore differentiation isn't likely to go over any better here than it did at wordorigins, just FYI.

Is it something like "piss in one's pocket"? Though I assure you I've never heard it either.
And yes, what are you referring to with "onshore"?

He means inside the US. Whether he limits it to the contiguous 48 states I'm not sure, but perhaps he will elucidate.

Mar: I dropped it more to gage the reaction than anything else. Invariably one or two purists will become unhinged and even threaten to ban me for such unweblike conduct
But now that my location appears in the block to the left, "onshore" should present no further problems
Nor "offshore," which means anywhere but onshore
I have also been torn limb from limb for omitting punctuation at end of para
All who are offended, please forgive

I am more familiar with the expression "Pissing in your ear and telling you it's rain" which is often used, here in the Colonies, to describe a person, often a politician, who is thought to have lied consistently over a long period of time.

It seems a pointlessly pretentious piece of self-aggrandisement to me, the sort of braggadocio so often associated (in the minds of many outside those not-so United States) with the US. Unless, of course, it's simply anti-Hawaiian rather than anti-global. It certainly does not possess any more clarity or specificity than does the much more neutral "US".

Do I hear the echoes of Spiro Agnew resounded in here somewhere?

Sorry, you'll have to 'splain that one. Your aptly titled vice-president left the stage when I was just starting school, so I don't get the reference.

Of course it may or may not include Canada and Mexico. Even perhaps Central and South America. Does it exclude, e.g., Catalina Island?

Vice President Spiro Agnew (or his speechwriter(s)) was/were well know for his/their alliterative vituperation. I kinda miss that and simply noted that the style was revived in Max's post to dalehileman.

Hmmm... ok, 'cept "onshore" and "offshore" seem to me to be much too subjective to be of any use as geographical locators. For me, for instance, "onshore" will always mean where I am at the mo', as opposed to the Canary or Balearic Islands, Ceuta or Melilla; but then again, I dare say Isla Graciosa is "offshore" for the inhabitants of Lanzarote...
...and so on, and on, and on... we're all, fortunately, in different parts of the world!

Not just to you. It is obvious that they are not intended as such, but as bait, being tranparently inflammatory with the obnoxious uscentrism of their use. That spells troll in my book.

An editor, marking up a manuscript of mine, wrote, in red ink, next to my phrase "a group of talkative priests" the word "redundant."

Well, exactly, if they're being talkative they must be in a group, which group must include some listeners.

Not just in yours. Said troll runs the risk of being banned from wordorigins.
PS love the coinage uscentrism, Max!
