Hehe... thanks for that, padre. Makes me wish there was something like "words magazine"... now there's something I'll subscribe to.

The Global Language Monitor's homepage: http://www.languagemonitor.com/

I can't put my finger on why, but I feel deeply suspicious about this.

There's a number of problems. Just a couple off the top of my head:

La racaille in a list of terms which seem to be taking a n edge off things.

A.D. is not Latin for Year of our Lord, it's Latin for Y.L. but that's probably too nit picky.

D'accord Bingley. Never trust a guy who sez, in his own personal auto-bio, "Payack graduated from Harvard University ..." rather than "Harvard graduated Payack."

Harvard scribed lines up the side of Payack?

Or either that or they used Payack to replace the late lamented Oliver Smoot to measure the Harvard Bridge, one.

A.D. doesn't mean "anno domini?"

A.D. does mean "anno domini". Y.L means "year (of our) Lord".

I *think Faldo's point was that A.D. is an abrev. of "anno domini", and the englished equiv. would be Y.L. non?
(yeah, prolly too nitpicky)

- Me too. It hardly furthers anyone's wisdom.
