I was thinking about the C&GS the other day at the Veterans Day program at the kids' school. Outside the government very few people are aware that there are actually seven uniformed services: Army, AF, Navy, Marines, CG, and then the two no one's familiar with, NOAA, formerly C&GS, and the Public Health Serve.

Both of the latter have commissioned officers who are paid in the same manner and on the same scale as commissioned officers in the armed services. When I was working for a living I would get occasional calls from the pay people at these two services about military pay issues, which affected them equally. And I seem to recall that one or both of them contracted their pay operations to one of the armed services. BTW, armed services is used to differentiate among the uniformed services, and the armed services have enlisted and warrant ranks, while NOAA and PHS have only officer corps.
