(nov 12th --new items are added frequently--so be sure to check date) has a translation of a post and mocks the word gravid. and lets crippie pass with out comment.

while gravid is not a common english word (and i had to look it up and double check the meaning) i was surprized to see it questioned.

so what do you think? is gravid that odd a word?

I think they point to gravid with irony, since cripple is so obviously misspelled (unless you're sposed to give your seat to those under the influence of cryppie)

The Lab Chop served with garwy sauce sounds pretty tasty. (This is on the European menu in Indonesia).

Gravid is a perfectly normal word to those of us who deal with reptiles. It means "full of eggs", or, as I someimes say, eggnant.

I just looked that up. Also means "in an advanced stage of pregnancy", as opposed to just "pregnant". Naturally it has a Latin origin, so I'd say it's an inkhorn term.

its not in common use, but its sure not an inkhorn term.
(as eliz. points out, its just not usually used with humans in common usage)

I'd say gravid is a medical term rather than an inkhorn term.

Agreed. Making it jargon, rather than esoterica. "Gravidity" is a standard term, referring to number of times a woman has been pregnant (as opposed to number of deliveries ["parity"] or number of living children).

For humans we use the phrase "very pregnant."

The Portuguese word for pregnant is grávida but, in the sixties, when I was in Brazil, this was not a proper term in more polite society, where they used condição interessante instead.

I think I would use the term 'heavily pregnant' rather than 'very pregnant'. Wouldn't 'very pregnant' be the opposite of 'a little bit pregnant'?

'a little bit pregnant'

Hence the observation: "Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades."

Yup. And I don't believe any male has the right to criticize these usages.

Heavily pregnant sounds good but I don't think I've ever heard it.

horseshoes and handgrenades

Of course, ironically, close does not count in horseshoes. Handy pomegranates is another thing.

...not that a good pitcher would be content with anything less than a "ringer", but...
From the NHPA: “Shoe in Count - A shoe which is not a ringer but comes to rest with any portion of it within 6 inches of any part of the stake is a shoe in count. A shoe in count has a value of one point.”
What the rules are in Japan is unknown to me.

Six inches is rather specific, ain't it? Much more than close enough, or at least the term is used in English. Next time you're in Japan say "hai" to the Emperor for me.

Have you heard the expression "close enough for government work"? [Or does this violate the policy of avoiding politics?]

Jackie:

I was thinking about the C&GS the other day at the Veterans Day program at the kids' school. Outside the government very few people are aware that there are actually seven uniformed services: Army, AF, Navy, Marines, CG, and then the two no one's familiar with, NOAA, formerly C&GS, and the Public Health Serve.

Both of the latter have commissioned officers who are paid in the same manner and on the same scale as commissioned officers in the armed services. When I was working for a living I would get occasional calls from the pay people at these two services about military pay issues, which affected them equally. And I seem to recall that one or both of them contracted their pay operations to one of the armed services. BTW, armed services is used to differentiate among the uniformed services, and the armed services have enlisted and warrant ranks, while NOAA and PHS have only officer corps.

'Army surplus store' has got to be an oxymoron!

I sat through the first church service I have attended for many years on Remembrance Sunday recently - as school head boy Jim was laying a wreath - and I was forced to study again the ridiculous language employed by a well-meaning priest trying to differentiate between remembering lots of brave men and women in dignity yet without glorifying the horrific acts of war...

You have my sympathy in trying, good father. I think Anglicans in the UK suffer a burden doubled by dint of the strange link between church and state ~ but since this is getting dangerously near both religion AND politics I will gracefully withdraw before Mz J spanks me!
