engrish cot com http://www.engrish.com(nov 12th --new items are added frequently--so be sure to check date) has a translation of a post and mocks the word gravid. and lets crippie pass with out comment. while gravid is not a common english word (and i had to look it up and double check the meaning) i was surprized to see it questioned. so what do you think? is gravid that odd a word?

I think they point to gravid with irony, since cripple is so obviously misspelled (unless you're sposed to give your seat to those under the influence of cryppie)

Gravid is a perfectly normal word to those of us who deal with reptiles. It means "full of eggs", or, as I someimes say, eggnant.

I just looked that up. Also means "in an advanced stage of pregnancy", as opposed to just "pregnant". Naturally it has a Latin origin, so I'd say it's an inkhorn term.

its not in common use, but its sure not an inkhorn term.
(as eliz. points out, its just not usually used with humans in common usage)

I'd say gravid is a medical term rather than an inkhorn term.

Agreed. Making it jargon, rather than esoterica. "Gravidity" is a standard term, referring to number of times a woman has been pregnant (as opposed to number of deliveries ["parity"] or number of living children).
