An air ax is an imaginary musical instrument, usu guitar or sax; but obliged if musically inclined might explain meaning of fake-shred--thanks kindly all

... Air Bass." Now, I feel like anyone can pick up an air ax and fake-shred like they're Slash, but it takes a heavier mettle to fake-lay down the low-end grooves ...

to shred is to really tear up the guitar; fast, screaming licks. so if you're playing the air guitar, you can really fake shred...

Unlike last year, when there was so little snow in the Cascade Mountains that several ski areas nearly went out of business, snow has fallen early this year and many of Washington's ski areas are opening earlier than usual. Thanks be to God.

Among the subculture which rides upon snowboards, the term shredding is used to describe what it is that they do on their boards. It is part of the patois, and thus imperfectly intelligible to those outside of their group.

Father, Thank you. In that sense, then, wouldn't the expression mean to perform the sport on a slope without snow

Eta thank you. Then wouldn't the expression, "to fake-shred an air guitar" be redundant--or isn't that the right term for it

well, one could, I suppose, just strum a little on the air-guitar... I think the whole fake thing is un-necessary, however.

'To shred' has also been used (in my neck of the woods) to mean 'to practice'... as in "shred your scales". It is the usage I'm much more familiar with (notwithstanding the actual practicing part).

In snowboarding jargon, fakie or fakey is the style of riding a bi-directional board backwards.

there's also "goofy", which is to ride with the right foot forward.

most snowboards today are bi-directional, but riders have a stance, either goofy (right foot forward) or regular (there's another name for it, but it escapes me). to pull a fakey is to ride with the opposite foot forward, and is a very common move.

All this snowboarding jargon got me thinking about skateboarding. The terms "fakey" and "switch" are more commonly used on the pavement. Skateboarding is slightly more complicated, since your feet aren't strapped to the board. My stance is goofy, but in skateboarding, pulling a fakey keeps my right foot forward...just way forward. Normally my left foot is on the tail of the board and my right foot is in the middle somewhere. So when doing fakey, my right foot moves up to the nose of the board and my left foot comes to about the middle of the board. I'm sure you've all heard the term "ollie" before. It's the most basic skateboarding trick where you kick the tail of the board, slide your front foot up the board, and jump up. Well, doing this fakey is called a "nollie" since your kicking the nose of the board instead of the tail. Make sense?
